Dan Bowen is the Founding Partner and CEO of Dempsey Ventures, LLC, a private equity investment firm formed in 2006 which primarily invests in medical device companies but also seeks opportunistic investments in real estate and other industries. Before founding Dempsey Ventures, Dan served as President and CEO of Aspen Surgical, a medical supply manufacturer. He started Aspen in 1999 with an acquisition of products from Imagyn Medical Technologies. Under Dan’s management, Aspen became a market leader in surgical products, through multiple add-on acquisitions and aggressive new product development. He sold a majority interest to RoundTable Healthcare Partners in 2006 and remained an active board member and shareholder until Hill-Rom acquired Aspen Surgical in 2012 for $400 million. Dan received his Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing in 1988 from Michigan State University. He has served on several boards including Tidi Products, Argentum Medical, Svelte Medical, Best Metals Products, and Beaver Visitec.
John Sommerdyke is the Managing Partner of Dempsey Ventures. Before joining Dempsey in 2013, John worked for over 20 years in private practice as a corporate attorney representing start-ups, growing businesses seeking venture capital, private equity funds and a diverse range of companies in merger, acquisition, and divestiture transactions. He previously served as Vice President of Business Development for Aspen Surgical Products, Inc. and a board member of Salamander Technologies, Inc., RF Identics, Inc. and Omega Medical Products, LLC. John currently serves on the boards of eAgile, Inc., SunMed Holdings, LLC and VN Industries, Inc. He earned his B.A. from Notre Dame University and his J.D. from the University of Michigan.
Randy Hoyt is an Operating Partner with Dempsey Ventures. Before joining Dempsey in 2018, Randy held the positions of Vice President of Manufacturing and Chief Operating Officer at SunMed for five years, leading the integration of four separate businesses into one. Before SunMed, Randy was the Executive Vice President of Operations for Aspen Surgical Products, Inc. where he led its global manufacturing team in operating room and wound care products for seven years. Through the vertical integration of products and acquisition of five companies, he helped transform the company into a major player in disposable surgical products. Randy has more than 30 years experience working in operational roles for manufacturing businesses including 24 years as an executive in the medical products industry. He has a global background and understanding of operations in Europe and China and has previously held executive management roles at Alliant Healthcare, Imagyn Medical, and Richard Allan Medical. Randy is a mechanical engineer, has a B.S. from Ferris State University, three U.S. patents and multiple awards for design innovations.
Brad joined Dempsey Ventures as Chief Financial Officer in July 2013. He brings 18 years of financial management experience. Before joining Dempsey, he spent 14 years in public accounting working with clients of various sizes on tax and consulting engagements. Brad received his Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting in 2001 from Davenport University and earned his CPA license in 2003. He currently serves as the CFO of SunMed Holdings, LLC.
Dawn manages the daily activities of Dempsey's office and assists in various projects for our portfolio companies. With almost 30 years of experience in the disposable medical supply industry, she started her career in 1990 as a direct marketing and customer service representative for Richard-Allan Medical. She held multiple positions within the company until Aspen Surgical acquired several of its product lines in 1999. Dawn became the first employee of Aspen, developing and managing inside sales and customer service. In 2009 she left Aspen to become the office manager for Dempsey Ventures and assistant to Dan.
